Facebook update: Promotional guidelines change

Facebook sent out a release on Wednesday morning saying that they have updated their Pages Terms in order to make it easier for businesses of all sizes to create and administer promotions on Facebook.

Here’s what Page administrators need to know:
  • They’ve removed the requirement that promotions on Facebook only be administered through apps / tabs on the fan page
  • Now, promotions may be administered on Page Timelines and in apps on Facebook. For example, brands can now:
    • Collect entries by having users post on the Page or comment/like a Page post
    • Collect entries by having users message the Page
    • Utilize likes as a voting mechanism
  • As before, however, businesses cannot administer promotions on personal Timelines (i.e. the brand manager who has 1,000 friends cannot run the promo from the personal profile)
  • Accurate tagging is required in promotions
In order to maintain the accuracy of Page content, Facebook’s Pages Terms now prohibit Pages from tagging or encouraging people to tag themselves in content that they are not actually depicted in. So, for instance:
  • It’s OK to ask people to submit names of a new product in exchange for a chance to win a prize
  • It’s not OK to ask people tag themselves in pictures of a new product in exchange for a chance to win a prize

However, we don’t see a problem with pages asking fans to tag themselves in a photo purely to gain more engagement where there is no competition running.

In a nutshell you can now run a competition on the page wall itself, however creating a promotion with an app on Facebook allows a Page to create a more personalised experience, more in line with a brand’s strategy and corporate identity. Apps provide more space and flexibility for content than Page posts alone. Promotions run through apps can collect data in a secure, structured way that may be appealing to advertisers, particularly larger brands, while creating a promotion with a Page is faster and easier. Additionally, as with all Page posts, Page posts about promotions are eligible to be displayed in the News Feeds of the people who like the Page and can be promoted to a broader audience.

Each campaign and objective will be different but a mix of an app and page competition with a media budget will yield good results for building a database and spreading the word.

Booking Facebook media made simple - meedee8 integrates into the Facebook ads API

meedee8 has released an upgrade that incorporates access to the Facebook Ads Application Programming Interface (API). This provides agencies and brands with an intelligent and seamless solution to book their Facebook ads, which are automatically optimized, instead of having to struggle to make sense of the complex and wide-ranging options that Facebook provides.

Marketers are faced with an ever increasing and overwhelming range of products from Facebook, and are required to choose from an array of over 60 permutations of placements and ad types to run their campaign.

For the past two years, Popimedia, Africa’s only Facebook Preferred Marketing Developer (PMD), have used their meedee8 tool to provide agencies and brands with a managed and accountable approach to Community Management, providing detailed insights into their Facebook Page Management strategy.

“It provides enormous insights into your social media pages on Facebook and Twitter,” says Gil Sperling, chief technology officer at Popimedia, of which meedee8 is a subsidiary. “The system’s features allow clients to monitor pages via a dashboard interface, flag and tag comments, preload content and receive insights – including growth, content and engagement quality, demographics and team collaboration, to name a few.”

Now, meedee8’s upgrade with Facebook’s ads API provides marketers with an objective-driven workflow to build a media campaign, for which meedee8 then selects the best Facebook products, copy and creative to achieve the business objective. The ad’s are further optimized on the fly ensuring best ROI at all times.

“Targeting the right audience for your campaign is possible via the wide reach that Facebook offers and by the deep insights that meedee8 offers,” says Sperling. “meedee8 now ensures the full life cycle of marketing is taken care of, right from objectives, targeting and ad type through to conversion, ensuring you get the best ROI for your spend.”

The results so far…
The meedee8 Facebook ads API component is currently being used in-house with a number of existing clients. The results are showing Cost Per Clicks (CPC) in the region of R0,72 to R4.45 and Cost Per Fans (CPF) in the region of R2,69 to R11. This is considerably better than the industry norm of R9 and R15 respectively.

“Brands and companies should be considering Facebook as a marketing platform rather than a social platform,” says Sperling. “Facebook should be used to drive boardroom-level metrics such as beers sold, contracts opened, home loans taken, churn reduced, or any objective relevant to the business.

Social metrics such as ‘likes’ and engagement are the lower level metrics used to achieve the boardroom-level metrics and can be irrelevant on their own for a business. Tools like the meedee8 allow for these kinds of metrics to be understood and expressed, so that true value can be derived from Facebook campaigns.”

How I survive as a Community Manager

by Rose Kotze

I’ve read many ‘How To Manage Your Community In The Best, Most Super Way’ blog posts, but for anyone who doesn’t poop rainbows 24/7 or actively enjoys being cursed at by perfect strangers – these can often be misleading. Basically, I rely on three fundamental pieces of information to help me through the veritable minefield that is social media management. And here they are:

Think of your community as a party, and you’re the host!

It’s a universal (and mostly unpleasant) truth that it’s hard work to host a party that doesn’t suck. Keeping the guest loo stocked with toilet paper, making sure nobody puts the dog in the microwave, dealing with that friend hysterically crying while downing entire mouthfuls of straight vodka because her ex just walked in with a really hot nineteen year old… it’s tough work. Tough work that needs to be managed with the grace of Princess Di, before she got dumped by Charles for Camilla.
If we’re going to beat this metaphor to the ground, as a host the community manager needs to ensure everything at her party runs smoothly. She needs to maintain conversations and solve problems that come up before fists fly. She must acknowledge all of her fans with warmth and genuine interest – kind of like how you’d engage that Aunt who smells like cat wee and Listerine, but whose will is a major draw card. It also helps to think of your content as well thought out, gourmet canapĂ©s – even if the party is meh they’ll encourage people to return. Which brings me to my next point:

Be relevant!

Harlem Shake? Goats? Sit down. Like those canapĂ©s you want your content to evoke that kind of jealous awe present when one thin, hot girl encounters another thinner, hotter girl. Remember memes have a thirty minute shelf life, if that. Post about current events the day of or the day after. Nobody cares about Adele’s heinous dress at the Grammys anymore.

Remember, it’s nothing personal!

You just get those people. Those people who whinge about seeing adverts on their timeline.  Those people who ask for free things. Those people who insult you, your mum and your kitten in a 500 word tirade that they’ve copied and pasted on every single one of your posts. When dealing with this sort of abuse on a frequent basis, it’s easy to lose your positive outlook and consider giving it all up for a life of finger-painting and selling falafels at your neighbourhood craft market. Don’t let this happen! The kind of person who has the time to dedicate hours a day moaning on social media is the kind of person who got picked last for PE in grade five because they smelt kind of weird. Keeping a cheerful, positive attitude is a wonderful way to turn a negative experience into a positive one. Not really, but at least you can go home safe in the knowledge that your life is almost certainly better than Sonja van Pantoffel from Benoni’s. But seriously, when managing communities, it’s important to not let negative comments or experiences get you down.

Facebook Finally Adds 'Reply' Option to Comments

by Camilla Gildenhuys

Facebook announced yesterday that, after months of testing, the 'Reply' option is being rolled out to comments. Community Managers everywhere rejoice!

In their statement they said:
We've built a new feature that will improve the quality of conversation on your page: Replies. Starting today, you will be able to reply directly to comments left on your page and start a conversation thread. The most active and engaging conversations will be shown at the top of your posts.
There are 2 ways that we see Replies aiding us in everyday community management and page appearance:
  1. Community managers can directly address fans comments and queries in a post: This allows one-to-one type engagement with fans even through there are multiple conversations occurring on a single post. It "will make it easier for you to interact directly with individual readers and keep relevant conversations connected," said Vadim Lavrusik, Facebook's journalism program manager, in an official blog post
  2. The best conversations will be viewed: Facebook's algorithm allows for the best conversations to be seen at the top of the post. In this way fans won't wade through tens and hundred of comments, they'll get what they may want to see right under the post itself. Now, we still have to see what Facebook deems 'the best' (whether it be most replies from brand, other people, etc) but we're hoping it sits in the brand's favour. In saying this, we recommend that negative sentiment and commentary be taken offline to avoid highlighting of damaging conversations.
Facebook Replies

You can start using Replies from today! There will be a banner under the Page's Admin Panel prompting you to 'turn on' Replies. If you don't opt in now, Facebook will do it for you automatically on 10 July 2013.

Replies is currently only available on desktop, but will be made available on mobile in the future.

Facebook updates their cover image policy

by Camilla Gildenhuys

We're happy to announce that Facebook has updated their policy regarding cover images which results in an anything goes approach. Well, to a degree...
This is the previous policy regarding cover images:
Cover photos cannot include:
A. Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it at our website”.
B. Contact information such as a website address, email, mailing address, or information that should go in your Page’s “About” section.
C. References to Facebook features or actions, such as Like” or “Share” or an arrow pointing from the cover photo to any of these features.
D. Calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends”.
Covers must not be false, deceptive or misleading, and must not infringe on third parties’ intellectual property.
So really that left a picture with perhaps the brand logo and campaign name.

This is the latest statement released by Facebook on 11 March 2013:

What are the guidelines for my Page's cover photo?

All cover photos are public. Anyone who visits your Page will be able to see the cover photo. Cover photos can't be deceptive, misleading, or infringe on anyone else's copyright. You may not encourage people to upload your cover photo to their personal timelines.
Cover photos must be at least 399 pixels wide and may not include images with more than 20% text.
So really it means that Facebook don't mind if you promote your business, a campaign or an application in the copy, just as long as it doesn't exceed 20% of the image.

Here's a way to determine whether your image is using 20% or more or less, from socialfresh.com:
If you overlay a 5×5 grid onto your image, and your text fills more than 5 boxes of the 25, it will fall foul of Facebook

This passes muster
This passes muster
This doesn't
This doesn’t.

In conclusion, remember Facebook's general advice on posting images to maximise engagement:
  • Photos should include real people and real things. User sentiment research shows that emotions triggered by images of real people, real situations, and real objects, are more lasting and compelling than those with words or text.
  • Text or text overlay should be minimal. Text in photos from friends is rare, so text in photos from brands is seen as inauthentic and generates negative reactions.
  • Brand logos, campaign slogans, and taglines should be used sparingly. Consider using a photo of your product in action instead of overlaying your brand logo or slogan on an unrelated image.
  • Keep it simple.

Facebook Timeline: Do you Speak Brand?

By DonoWhite

It’s a guy thing, a girl thing, a techno thing, brand thing, your thing, my thing, our thing. True but Facebook is becoming more than just a ‘Thing’ in the world after the Facebook Marketing Conference (fMC) held on 29 February 2012 at a packed Museum of Natural History in New York.
For Africa, which is home to some of the world’s fastest growing economies, it’s a winning scenario for brands to truly make themselves heard.

Facebook transforming Marketing – Colour up digital
Coming out of fMC, a couple of new elements to the platform will assist brands in social media to yield positive returns. With the goal to connect brands and humans, the Time line concept is introduced. This rich and customisable canvas allows brands to customise cover images, avatars (or ‘profilics’), integrate applications, gestures, as well as pin and star content at the top of the time line to intrigue and keep potential new fans as companies express their identities.
Sheryl Sandberg, COO Facebook: “It enables brands to find their voices and have genuine potential relationships with their customers”.
Starbucks
Starbucks showing off where your existing tabs will be positioned, talking about, and cover image.

Part of the users experience starts with the primary sense of sight, so give them eye candy.  Pages using the new timeline, set to come in on 30 Mach 2012, will need to create a Gestalt and make the elements work together as an enticing whole and give fans pure sugar, pure sweetness and make it Roar with Flavour.

1. Premium Offers – Drive it

Advertising models are out with the static and it is in with a breath of fresh air. Everyone on Facebook is accustomed to those Market Place ads sitting on the right hand side of the newsfeed, measuring user’s interaction with brands via click throughs.
With new Premium Offers, You always get something out as brands are brought to life and into stories, filtered into target audience’s newsfeeds, even if users or their friends are not fans of the page. Here a brand’s content is the ad, whether a status update, image or video.

2. Reach Generator – Touch the impossible!

Moving toward a broadcasting model, Premium ads can be re-run in the newsfeed of the target audience. As the elements of Timeline and Premium offers work together, fans start becoming brand ambassadors of the page. It is the Reach Generator Product that helps brands interact with a fan or potential fan and have us all working Today, Tomorrow, Together.
In comparison to a page’s reach of only 16% today, Reach Generator will ensure that up to 75% of fans see a page’s content every month and therefore increase ROI.  Now we can truly target your friends and their friends, and their friends.

3. Facebook Mobile – Where ever you go!

In 2010 Africa, with its population of 1 Billion and 500 million cellphones, mobile is the number one way to access the internet.  It came as sigh of relief for South Africa, as well as other top mobile users like Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt and Ghana, Facebook now caters for people on the move with premium ads filtering into the mobile version of the network.  Globally Facebook says it will have access to 845 million users across all internet spheres. For South Africa we can say we have reached the possible.

4. New Offers- So Much More

What’s novel in the house of Facebook is that stories will appear to users as they log out, ensuring they don’t leave home without it. Additionally, Brands will be able to engage in private discourse with fans. The personal touch of 'helping you', the fan, will lead to less distraction on the wall and increased customer satisfaction.

5. Content- The power is now in your hands

“Brands on Facebook are the best content creators”, revealed Facebook VP of Product, Chris Cox a fMC . Content is still king, even more so now that it will become part of the advertising exposure. Coca Cola has plotted their entire history in Timeline and Kia has turned their timeline into a virtual show room.

Coca_cola
History Today with Time Line and your relationship with the brand revealed
Coupled with real time analytics, the ORM team must work closely with the Community Managers to understand what content should be promoted, starred and pinned. More than ever it is time to innovate!

Kia
Window Shopping: Real life product experiences go digital

Ultimately the true indicator of these changes will be judged by the fans. When they feel over exposed and invaded they may jump to Twitter, where there are only Promoted Tweets, or take to Google Plus, to spend time in video based ‘Hang Outs’. It will now come down to content being interesting on Facebook to keep the fan. Despite the changes, the rule will still be the same- don’t just keep the fan, ENGAGE!

Facebook’s New Open Graph

Will it change the Web forever?
Since its launch in 2004, Facebook has fundamentally changed the way interactions occur online. Fast forward to February 2012, and Facebook has 845 million active users representing a sizeable portion of the worldwide internet population. Allowing the world to be more connected, Facebook plans to extend these connections to all corners of the web with its open graph.

What exactly is the open graph?
In a nutshell, the open graph is Facebook’s technology allowing companies developers to turn their data into objects Facebook users can interact with through real-world actions.
Mark Zuckerberg calls this “The most transformative thing we’ve ever done for the web”. He claims that these connections are happening all over the world, and "if we can take these separate maps of the graph and pull them all together, then we can create a Web that's smarter, more social, more personalized, and more semantically aware."
[wpvideo gM9iiv2x]
F8 keynote introduction

The good news is that not everything will be seen. Open graph actions are only posted to the ticker, on the right side of the Facebook Timeline, and in the user’s timeline. Only if Facebook starts to notice interesting trends relating to the same action types will aggregated information be displayed in the newsfeed.
It seems that Facebook is forging its way across the web to personalise everything. Zuckerberg claims the web is at a turning point, because “up until recently, the default on the Web has been that most things aren't social and most things don't use your real identity”. The open graph will result in a world where fan’s identities will no longer be defined by things just on Facebook, but rather by actions all over the Web.

Facebook Places – bigger is definitely better

Location based services leapt onto the South African centre stage in a big way last week when Facebook announced the local availability of Facebook Places. The application is designed to help people share information about where they are, connect with friends who may be nearby and find special offers from their favourite retailers, restaurants and entertainment venues.
Facebook's new Places feature lets you share your current location by "checking in" from your smartphone. For businesses, claiming and managing a Place page is a must. Plain and simple, it is a promising new way to connect with customers, prospects and partners.

But what makes this announcement so significant?

It is about sheer volume. Compared to Foursquare with almost 8 Million users globally, Facebook with more than 600 million people already using the platform and close to 4 million in South Africa alone is set to become THE location based service provider of choice.

How does this add to the services that Popimedia already offer?

From a marketing point of view, the sky is the limit and in this instance bigger is definitely better. It now becomes easy for big and small businesses and consumer products in South Africa to leverage Facebook Places for any number of marketing initiatives from loyalty and rewards programmes to creating awareness about new products and special offers. Competitors like Groupon and Google Latitude have a lot of catching up to do as Facebook becomes more ubiquitous.
So is the Facebook Places announcement a big deal? Absolutely.

Facebook keeps innovating

Facebook is constantly innovating and introducing new services that have an impact on the social media environment at large.
Most notably marketers and brand managers can look forward to Facebook Places and Facebook Deals - innovations that make an even stronger case for social media in the mobile arena. Already launched in the UK and US, local companies can look forward to having access to these services in the next couple of months .
Used independently or together these services are simply powerful stuff. Facebook Places, a location based service, gives brands the capability to set-up their "place" on Facebook. Users can then check into a place with their mobile phone, telling their Facebook friends where they are and connecting with friends nearby. From a business point of view, this will open up marketing opportunities to wider or brand new target markets.
Through Facebook Deals, retailers and other merchants can offer special deals to the users who check into their "place". Users who take on the deal then tell their friends via the news feed that they "got R50 off a pair of jeans" or "a free muffin with their cappuccino". This gives the brand a great advantage as their customers are now punting their brand through word of mouth - the most effective form of marketing.

Social media marketing opportunities

Using the inherent features of Facebook and the constantly evolving platform, there are some incredible marketing opportunities available on Facebook:
  1. Socially activated crowdsourcing: send out a call to action to your community to become intimately involved with your product or brand. This can be applied to the full development life cycle of a product - from branding, naming, copy and even sales. You know that your product will be successful because your customers are the ones who designed it and land up selling it for you. This can be achieved through a series of campaigns on your fan page, supporting functional and interactive tabs and a well planned content strategy, each with social sharing features which allow the fan to market the brand for you by word of mouth. See an example of what Vitamin Water did here.
  2. Social e-Commerce: You can even go as far as selling your product on your Facebook Fanpage by adding an e-Commerce tab. The added benefit here is that, when somebody buys one of your items, it is possible to post that action to their profile page - instant word-of-mouth circulation. Have a look at how Delta Airlines offers ticket Sales on their Facebook page here.
  3. Social philanthropy: for brands such as banks or insurance companies, a good idea is to support a cause to which users may be familiar with. The incredible thing with the Facebook platform and its range of features and facilities is that you can allow your fans to be involved in your philanthropy giving them power to have a say on how and where your philanthropy should be applied, making your fans feel good about their actions and your brand, and of course marketing the cause by word of mouth.

Content strategy

Tools aside, a solid content strategy for your social media campaign is a must. How often have we seen communication debacles on Facebook Fanpages where a situation could have been dealt with more strategically. Examples of this include the Nestle catastrophe where Greenpeace created a parody video of the company's KitKat candy bar and the resulting fallout.
A strong content strategy is invaluable and you should keep in mind that this strategy is not about a daily post on how wonderful your product is. As with any social media activity, your comments and posts must always be relevant and need to resonate with your community.
Social media is becoming ever more relevant in our country and we are even seeing newspapers like Business Day talking about the possibility of replacing email with these new platforms. We bet that Facebook will be leading the way.
