How I survive as a Community Manager

by Rose Kotze

I’ve read many ‘How To Manage Your Community In The Best, Most Super Way’ blog posts, but for anyone who doesn’t poop rainbows 24/7 or actively enjoys being cursed at by perfect strangers – these can often be misleading. Basically, I rely on three fundamental pieces of information to help me through the veritable minefield that is social media management. And here they are:

Think of your community as a party, and you’re the host!

It’s a universal (and mostly unpleasant) truth that it’s hard work to host a party that doesn’t suck. Keeping the guest loo stocked with toilet paper, making sure nobody puts the dog in the microwave, dealing with that friend hysterically crying while downing entire mouthfuls of straight vodka because her ex just walked in with a really hot nineteen year old… it’s tough work. Tough work that needs to be managed with the grace of Princess Di, before she got dumped by Charles for Camilla.
If we’re going to beat this metaphor to the ground, as a host the community manager needs to ensure everything at her party runs smoothly. She needs to maintain conversations and solve problems that come up before fists fly. She must acknowledge all of her fans with warmth and genuine interest – kind of like how you’d engage that Aunt who smells like cat wee and Listerine, but whose will is a major draw card. It also helps to think of your content as well thought out, gourmet canapés – even if the party is meh they’ll encourage people to return. Which brings me to my next point:

Be relevant!

Harlem Shake? Goats? Sit down. Like those canapés you want your content to evoke that kind of jealous awe present when one thin, hot girl encounters another thinner, hotter girl. Remember memes have a thirty minute shelf life, if that. Post about current events the day of or the day after. Nobody cares about Adele’s heinous dress at the Grammys anymore.

Remember, it’s nothing personal!

You just get those people. Those people who whinge about seeing adverts on their timeline.  Those people who ask for free things. Those people who insult you, your mum and your kitten in a 500 word tirade that they’ve copied and pasted on every single one of your posts. When dealing with this sort of abuse on a frequent basis, it’s easy to lose your positive outlook and consider giving it all up for a life of finger-painting and selling falafels at your neighbourhood craft market. Don’t let this happen! The kind of person who has the time to dedicate hours a day moaning on social media is the kind of person who got picked last for PE in grade five because they smelt kind of weird. Keeping a cheerful, positive attitude is a wonderful way to turn a negative experience into a positive one. Not really, but at least you can go home safe in the knowledge that your life is almost certainly better than Sonja van Pantoffel from Benoni’s. But seriously, when managing communities, it’s important to not let negative comments or experiences get you down.

Facebook Timeline: Do you Speak Brand?

By DonoWhite

It’s a guy thing, a girl thing, a techno thing, brand thing, your thing, my thing, our thing. True but Facebook is becoming more than just a ‘Thing’ in the world after the Facebook Marketing Conference (fMC) held on 29 February 2012 at a packed Museum of Natural History in New York.
For Africa, which is home to some of the world’s fastest growing economies, it’s a winning scenario for brands to truly make themselves heard.

Facebook transforming Marketing – Colour up digital
Coming out of fMC, a couple of new elements to the platform will assist brands in social media to yield positive returns. With the goal to connect brands and humans, the Time line concept is introduced. This rich and customisable canvas allows brands to customise cover images, avatars (or ‘profilics’), integrate applications, gestures, as well as pin and star content at the top of the time line to intrigue and keep potential new fans as companies express their identities.
Sheryl Sandberg, COO Facebook: “It enables brands to find their voices and have genuine potential relationships with their customers”.

Part of the users experience starts with the primary sense of sight, so give them eye candy.  Pages using the new timeline, set to come in on 30 Mach 2012, will need to create a Gestalt and make the elements work together as an enticing whole and give fans pure sugar, pure sweetness and make it Roar with Flavour.

1. Premium Offers – Drive it

Advertising models are out with the static and it is in with a breath of fresh air. Everyone on Facebook is accustomed to those Market Place ads sitting on the right hand side of the newsfeed, measuring user’s interaction with brands via click throughs.
With new Premium Offers, You always get something out as brands are brought to life and into stories, filtered into target audience’s newsfeeds, even if users or their friends are not fans of the page. Here a brand’s content is the ad, whether a status update, image or video.

2. Reach Generator – Touch the impossible!

Moving toward a broadcasting model, Premium ads can be re-run in the newsfeed of the target audience. As the elements of Timeline and Premium offers work together, fans start becoming brand ambassadors of the page. It is the Reach Generator Product that helps brands interact with a fan or potential fan and have us all working Today, Tomorrow, Together.
In comparison to a page’s reach of only 16% today, Reach Generator will ensure that up to 75% of fans see a page’s content every month and therefore increase ROI.  Now we can truly target your friends and their friends, and their friends.

3. Facebook Mobile – Where ever you go!

In 2010 Africa, with its population of 1 Billion and 500 million cellphones, mobile is the number one way to access the internet.  It came as sigh of relief for South Africa, as well as other top mobile users like Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt and Ghana, Facebook now caters for people on the move with premium ads filtering into the mobile version of the network.  Globally Facebook says it will have access to 845 million users across all internet spheres. For South Africa we can say we have reached the possible.

4. New Offers- So Much More

What’s novel in the house of Facebook is that stories will appear to users as they log out, ensuring they don’t leave home without it. Additionally, Brands will be able to engage in private discourse with fans. The personal touch of 'helping you', the fan, will lead to less distraction on the wall and increased customer satisfaction.

5. Content- The power is now in your hands

“Brands on Facebook are the best content creators”, revealed Facebook VP of Product, Chris Cox a fMC . Content is still king, even more so now that it will become part of the advertising exposure. Coca Cola has plotted their entire history in Timeline and Kia has turned their timeline into a virtual show room.

Coupled with real time analytics, the ORM team must work closely with the Community Managers to understand what content should be promoted, starred and pinned. More than ever it is time to innovate!

Kia
Window Shopping: Real life product experiences go digital

Ultimately the true indicator of these changes will be judged by the fans. When they feel over exposed and invaded they may jump to Twitter, where there are only Promoted Tweets, or take to Google Plus, to spend time in video based ‘Hang Outs’. It will now come down to content being interesting on Facebook to keep the fan. Despite the changes, the rule will still be the same- don’t just keep the fan, ENGAGE!

Facebook keeps innovating

Facebook is constantly innovating and introducing new services that have an impact on the social media environment at large.
Most notably marketers and brand managers can look forward to Facebook Places and Facebook Deals - innovations that make an even stronger case for social media in the mobile arena. Already launched in the UK and US, local companies can look forward to having access to these services in the next couple of months .
Used independently or together these services are simply powerful stuff. Facebook Places, a location based service, gives brands the capability to set-up their "place" on Facebook. Users can then check into a place with their mobile phone, telling their Facebook friends where they are and connecting with friends nearby. From a business point of view, this will open up marketing opportunities to wider or brand new target markets.
Through Facebook Deals, retailers and other merchants can offer special deals to the users who check into their "place". Users who take on the deal then tell their friends via the news feed that they "got R50 off a pair of jeans" or "a free muffin with their cappuccino". This gives the brand a great advantage as their customers are now punting their brand through word of mouth - the most effective form of marketing.

Social media marketing opportunities

Using the inherent features of Facebook and the constantly evolving platform, there are some incredible marketing opportunities available on Facebook:
  1. Socially activated crowdsourcing: send out a call to action to your community to become intimately involved with your product or brand. This can be applied to the full development life cycle of a product - from branding, naming, copy and even sales. You know that your product will be successful because your customers are the ones who designed it and land up selling it for you. This can be achieved through a series of campaigns on your fan page, supporting functional and interactive tabs and a well planned content strategy, each with social sharing features which allow the fan to market the brand for you by word of mouth. See an example of what Vitamin Water did here.
  2. Social e-Commerce: You can even go as far as selling your product on your Facebook Fanpage by adding an e-Commerce tab. The added benefit here is that, when somebody buys one of your items, it is possible to post that action to their profile page - instant word-of-mouth circulation. Have a look at how Delta Airlines offers ticket Sales on their Facebook page here.
  3. Social philanthropy: for brands such as banks or insurance companies, a good idea is to support a cause to which users may be familiar with. The incredible thing with the Facebook platform and its range of features and facilities is that you can allow your fans to be involved in your philanthropy giving them power to have a say on how and where your philanthropy should be applied, making your fans feel good about their actions and your brand, and of course marketing the cause by word of mouth.

Content strategy

Tools aside, a solid content strategy for your social media campaign is a must. How often have we seen communication debacles on Facebook Fanpages where a situation could have been dealt with more strategically. Examples of this include the Nestle catastrophe where Greenpeace created a parody video of the company's KitKat candy bar and the resulting fallout.
A strong content strategy is invaluable and you should keep in mind that this strategy is not about a daily post on how wonderful your product is. As with any social media activity, your comments and posts must always be relevant and need to resonate with your community.
Social media is becoming ever more relevant in our country and we are even seeing newspapers like Business Day talking about the possibility of replacing email with these new platforms. We bet that Facebook will be leading the way.
